Actually, I love SMS - much handier/more inobtrusive than bellowing into a phone on the bus. It is also cheaper when you're roaming to just send SMSs. The best way to use it is in conjunction with return receipts and validity periods so that out of date messages expire - these functions weren't really around on early phones.
However, I wouldn't use it for pager replacement for network management for example.
I have T-Mobile,which comes with AIM. In that my sons have aim (one in Cincinnati and one in Columbus)and her lovely self has it in Scotland,it pretty much takes care of my needs.
