Dropping in quickly again to say bad things about Bush, though:

"To help get its message out around the world, the White House formally announced today that Mr. Bush had established an Office of Global Communications to guide United States government agencies in how to "disseminate truthful, accurate and effective messages about the American people and their government" to audiences around the world." (NY Times)

Hi. I'd like to introduce you to the new Office of Propaganda. Truthful, Accurate and Effective, eh? I think we can ignore the first two there.

Does it not seem a little, er, dodgy that such an office needs establishing?

Hmmm...shades of 1984. The "Ministry of Truth" has arrived...roughly twenty years after. I guess never is sometimes better than late.

Even the best thing that could be said about it is that it's like a PR firm for the US. Why the hell would we need a PR firm though? *sigh* Like you, I'm inclined to say that it's propaganda, pure and simple.

As a reassurance - knowing these people, it won't be effective propaganda. The idiots can't even figure out why anyone could possibly dislike America. . .

I swear I did not vote for any of these people. Not one. Nope. Nor will I.

David, embarrassed American

Okay, I'm going to bite the bullet on this one and point out that America probably *does* need a PR firm at this point. This does not preclude it being a propaganda-producing machine, mind you. I'm just saying that an awful lot of good people do live over here and try to make their living, and in general would like the world to be a better place. For the sake of these people, I think the government is obligated to try and show that there is some good to this country, that there are some people who would like to see the world be a better place- for everyone, not just for them and the neighbors on their street.
