Sure. It's not a fully fledged Theory of the World (tm), just an indication of how things could go, were our economy to reach a level where labour wasn't a useful exchange-base any more. However, I'll challenge your notion that popularity only feeds the ego.
If I know a hundred people (or, in context here, a hundred people are paying attention to me), and I ask that group for something - help with a project, a certain out of print book, a lift to someplace - I have a far better chance of getting it than if I know ten people. And if those people are themselves popular, then if they pass the request on, I get an even higher chance. That's more than ego.
