Glad you think it's intelligent; I'm struggling through a cold here. :) Although maybe the extra effort is resulting in higher quality.

What you're missing above is the good feeling. I feel far better about getting a shirt made by [livejournal.com profile] caturah, for instance, than I do about buying one off the shelf. In turn, I think she feels better about making it for me than she would making it "just for sale". Equally, if someone calls on me to come help paint their kitchen, I'll go do it, and have a good time doing it, instead of it just being a job. And I don't think I'd like to run D&D games for paying customers (although the notion of asking players to chip in for new rulebooks has crossed my mind a time or two :) ) - but I love running them for friends.

So by using my attention-wealth to get something, rather than my money-wealth, two people end up pleased, AND I get whatever it was I'm looking for. If I use money-wealth, the experience goes more that two people are indifferent, I'm down a fiver, BUT I have what I wanted.

Also, you can't overcome cheapness with more money; it kinda takes the point out of it.
