I'm given to wonder what it is that causes inspiration to strike only when I'm away from any kind of recording device. I'm walking down the street bewteen work and the DART station, and I'm thinking "I could write about that, and that, and that" - just about anything I see, I could write about. But yesterday evening was spent in putting images together for a site I'm working on, so I didn't get a chance to even think about writing, and now, this morning, when I have a few minutes before things go pear shaped on my time again - and I can see they will, because the other tech person in the office has too much to do, and some bit of it is going to get moved to me at some point today - I crack my knuckles and try to write, and... nothing. Bah.

(10 minutes later)

Having tried hard to recall the stuff I DID think about last night, here are a few random observations.

How do people know how to react to things? It's never written down anywhere, and people look strangely at you when you say something about it, but everyone seems to react the same way to certain things. For instance, there's the exchange that happens when someone's been working for a long time on one thing, and they're starting to get frustrated.

Worker: This project is a real bitch. I'm going crosseyed from staring at the code.
Other Person: Yeah. Maybe you could pass some of it to Joe?
Worker: Nah, it's not too bad. I'm getting there.

Worker has contradicted themselves completely, but Other Person will be completely unsurprised by this - as long as Other Person has responded with sympathy or suggestion (and this makes it a crossgender reaction, too), Worker is happy and goes back to the code.

Then there's train protocol (or bus protocol, if you like). People don't sit on the same double seat as you unless every other seat is full - or they know you. If they know you at ALL, though, they sit beside you. Many people will stand, rather than sit on a double seat with a stranger, although this seems to only be on the train. Yet, I understand, this is very different in Spain and Italy, where people will go out of their way to sit with a stranger, even if every other seat on the conveyor is empty.

Can you tell I've been looking around?

Addendum; just after I finished this entry, I was, as predicted, handed a whole new project. To be done ASAP. Overtime tonight, yay.
