I’m a complete neophyte in the world of cars, but I would have thought something as complex would come with an owner’s manual. You get manuals with can openers and teapots. But there wasn’t one when it arrived, and searches on eBay and indeed, the web in general, are telling me that no manual exists for a Seat Ibiza after October 1999. The car in question is a 2000 registration, though.

For that matter, the manuals I’m finding for older models are published by Haynes, not Seat. Am I using the wrong term? “Owner’s manual” seems pretty simple…

For what it’s worth, I’m not looking to take it apart, or anything - just how to check the oil, set the clock, and other simple stuff.

I think to get hold of the manual for older cars, you have to get in touch with a warehouse/dealer of that specific car type. It's something I keep meaning to do for my car, since the manual that came with Kitty appears to have been in the back of someones jean pocket in the wash.

actually the Haynes manuals are wonderful. If you want to take a look at them the libraries have a chunk (and if you want I can organise one). Don't know about manufacturer manuals but they're usually as helpful as computer manuals.

At 15 I managed to get a battery out of a Peugot 305 charge it and put it back without killing anyone or the car with the help of a Haynes manual. They do go into a little too much detail but they will tell you about how to check just about everything on the car.

Re: completely separate

I've sent him an SMS - not entirely sure if it's going ahead or not, but I'll keep him posted.

The manufacturer's "Owner's Manual" you get with a car is a thick booklet that fits in the glovebox and is literally about the same size as the manual for a car stereo. Bizarre but true. Haynes are specialist publishers who will tell you what you really want to know, without the "Thank you for purchasing a..." crap. Try Easons on O'Connell St., downstairs. Admittedly it's a few years ago since I last looked, but I was able to get a Haynes manual for my first car, a UK import Vauxhall Nova that was several years old, in there.

But really, if it is only for stuff like the clock (just mess around with it yourself) or checking the oil, I wouldn't bother - just get someone with a bit of knowledge to show you.

Have you tried asking a Seat dealer for one? I'd be highly surprised if one didn't exist. In my experience, the car's manual is usually quite useful and will contain all the basic service info for a car a driver will need - eg. changing wheels, a quick guide around the engine bay, how to change a fuse, full specs of the car, details for winter driving and all that kind of thing. Haynes Manuals are overkill for 99% of drivers though they still make for interesting reading.

Sadly the newsgroups are also lacking such a manual - damned near everything else is represented but not that one. I'll take a peek around and post a request later if I remember.

I'm not familiar with the make or model (let me guess: it's small and fuel-efficient, so we don't have it here), but maybe this would help if you haven't already checked it and found it useless:

Have an 05 Seat Ibiza and it came with a manual, so they do exist.
