Bat

([personal profile] gothwalk Feb. 15th, 2009 08:13 pm)
So, while walking in Donadea Forest Park (which is great) today, we saw a bat, out in daylight - around 16:00-ish - flying around and apparently catching insects. Is that in any way normal? I've never seen a bat in anything other than dusk or night time before.

I read somewhere that insect populations are way down, and that bats have to hunt a lot more than they used to.

Up to about 20% of bat activity occurs during the day, so it's not entirely unusual. Maybe it's just a "day owl"?

it's been a cold winter - he's probably really hungry just now.

It probably woke up from hibernation or torpor because this last week has been a bit warmer.
