One of the things contributing to my overall sanity through several months of not leaving the immediate area has been the MMO Wurm Online. Unlike most MMOs, which focus on killing things and taking their treasure, Wurm focuses on trying not to be killed by things while you build a house to live in and grow enough food to eat. Once you get past that basic stage, it then becomes a game about maintaining an estate in a sort of late-medieval setting which closely resembles rural Sweden.

At present, the estate of Oak & Ash contains about 30 horses, 24 sheep, 20-ish cattle, some hens and a rooster, and a sizable set of vegetable and grain plots. It also has a mine, containing iron, marble, slate and sandstone, and has facilities for cooking, food storage, blacksmithing, carpentry, cloth-making, tanning, shipbuilding, and a wide variety of other crafts and skills, including archaeology.

We've built it up not quite from nothing - we captured the tail end of an abandoned previous settlement before the walls all fell down, and a nice neighbour gave us four horses - but almost everything else there has been captured from the wild, dug up, built, made, and so forth. Oh, and another neighbour provided some very fine axes.

Memorable points so far include capturing the first cow, building a rowboat in which we could sail up the coast rather than have to walk and get chewed on by giant spiders all the way, finally defeating an invading troll, re-assembling a sword from archaeological fragments, and discovering that with the axes from the neighbour and some decent armour, I can hold off the giant spiders.

Future projects involve road-building, a ten-story tower, a ship in which we can sail to other islands, adjusting one of the passages in the mine so it's not waterlogged, and breeding fierce sheep. Also developing a fishing pier, and getting to the point where we have goods we can sell into the local economy.

If you happen to be interested in this, drop me or [personal profile] avenueyew a message in some medium, and we'll get you sorted in Wurm with food and a place to sleep where the spiders can't get you. Thereafter you can establish your own settlement - we'll even help set it up - or you can just keep helping with ours.

So, I created a character about a week ago, made it to the harbour near the starting village, found I couldn't just book passage anywhere, found my way back to the starting village, found the one-way portal and used it to get to your island, tried following your directions, and ended up getting chased by a bear.

I managed to escape the bear, but then found a troll near a tower. I called some guards, who attacked the troll, and I helped every so often. Then the bear - or another bear - re-appeared, and I had to take refuge in someone else's house. I've not had a chance to log in again.

I might do so from tomorrow evening, but I'll likely try to do so with a fresh new character, now I know how to change appearance and such.

Awesome! Happy to try to help find you if you want to stick to your first?

One of my favourite bits was realising there were paper making materials so that meant I had to be able to make ink, experimenting with acorns Til I got tannin and *knowing* I could iron to produce the ink. There was a certain amount of smug. Then there was books and almanacs. Having my game character work on my SCA skill set has been really fun.
