You know the feeling you get when you've just said something really witty, and then you think of something you could have said so much better - and your initial wittiness now looks rather dull? Closely related to arriving at the perfect retort to someone three days after you last saw them? Yeah, that. I hate that.

For the second part there's that lovely french expression, l'esprit de l'escalier*, or "the spirit of the staircase." Which I have pretty frequently, I'm afraid...or more often, I still don't come up with the perfect retort. Ever. Oh well.
