RIP Sigil

Sigil is dead.

Sigil was our house linux box, used for dialling up without the awkwardness of a windows proxy. When [livejournal.com profile] inannajones and I got back from a birthday party last night, however, Sigil was making a noise describable only as "chuntering". Consultation today with [livejournal.com profile] olethros has revealed that the hard disk is done for, and Sigil is old enough (it's a 486) that a replacement can likely not be found. So we're on the fallback position of a winmodem and winproxy, which seems to suffice for the basics at least - I have web access, if slightly flaky, and mail access, likewise.

Are you sure about that? Finding a hard drive for a 486 wouldn't be that big of a deal here. Unless there's something nonstandard about that computer, you just need to find a dealer that does upgrades or takes old computers as trade-in on new ones. I've got a pile of small drives here that would work fine for something like that.
