So I got on the train in Dun Laoghaire last night, a bit later than I normally would, and this little old lady, all in black, black handbag, black hat, sits opposite me. I was reading A Clash of Kings, a big hardback book. After a few minutes glaring, she asked, in an educated, slightly English accent, "Is that a historical book, young man?".

"No, ma'am," I said, somewhat apologetically, "It's fantasy."

"Hmph. Ungodly stuff, other fantasy. Lord of the Rings is the only true fantasy."

I attract these people like a magnet.

The origional and best is the sequence of The Simarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings. In extensive fantasy / science fiction reading I have never come accross a more detailed world, with the possible exception of Terry Pratchett.
I have an extensive collection of background materials on Middle Earth, and continue to be amazed at how Tolkien's work continues to inspire people.

Of course I'm online, that is what system's administrators do when they are not working, (if you don’t do it using a computer its not worth doing at all, just ask Tanya).

We really do not get to see enough of each other, it only seems to be at family functions, when the place is full of people we both have to talk to, and we never get around to talking to each other. Which is a pity as we have so much in common.

Anyway I am recuperating after a very rough July, the brain surgery went fine, but I had a rather nasty “rare but documented” reaction to the high levels of steroid they had me on. But at last I am over the side effects of the drugs, and am ready to enjoy at least another 4 weeks of sick leave, I will not be officially feeling better until I get bored.

I am a 1 person IT dept. in London, but they sent someone over from corporate HQ in Texas to cover for me. So the place is in good hands. So when I am feeling well enough to enjoy my sick leave (nothing worse than having your sick leave ruined by feeling sick), I am going to go see all the wonderful and very interesting things there are to go to in London.
