I think we really do need a regular heavy trainer in Suil an Oilean - someone who knows what they're doing, knows how it works, and can tell when you're right, wrong or just plain doing a different thing. There are a couple of people around sometimes who can demonstrate stuff, and a couple who can take the time to teach a bit - but they're not the regulars. Of the regulars, only Cernac has any real heavy experience, and even he's still working out the details of how a wrap works, for instance. There's a new guy, Arthur, who's an experienced heavy - but he wants to learn fencing, and there just isn't time for him to do both. And it seems a bit unfair to go "Hey, new guy! Spend all your time teaching us!"

I was working on a plain, ordinary flat snap last night. "Too much arm!" someone said in passing. OK, I reduced the arm, increased the movement from the hip. "Not enough hip!" someone else said. So I upped the hip movement until I'm using most of a tai chi unwinding motion. "Still too much arm!"... but if I reduce the arm any more, I'll drop the stick - I'm not using any arm strength other than that necessary to guide the motion. And nobody seems to be able to tell me where they're seeing the "too much arm", only that it's there. Maybe I should crank up the arm, crank up the hip, and demonstrate what "too much arm" is. Only we've only one pell, and I don't really want to break it, or the sword.

I'll mail Cernac about this, I think, and see what the situation is with Arthur, and if there's any chance of getting one of the experienced heavies in for, say, four to six sessions in a row.

We (the ID officers) are aware of the situation: Ireland needs heavy trainers. Off the top of my head, the onhly ones I know in Ireland are Cernac, Sigmundr, Caradoc, Kreka, Robert, Ulfric and that's pretty much it I think. Some have more experience than others but it's not what could a real long-time fighter could give you.

Unfortunately we can't go: "Hey you the knight, go to Ireland every week and teach those people". The solution might be to get one or several knights to come to Ireland for an extended weekend and do intense teaching to those who are really keen. Basically there are simple drills one can use where you can end up teaching others and being taught at the same time. Cernac went to one of these, which is probably the main reason why he can sort of teach you stuff. He's also a damn good fencer, which can help.

I know you know. :) I'm just whingin', because it's almost always good to get it out of the system. I've mailed Cernac, and I'll discuss it with him - it might be that we can bribe a knight over with good food and accomodation, or whatever. :)

Try the new ones who just arrived recently from the US. I'm sure they wouldn't mind travelling ;)

Already there.

First off, I am checking to see if my friend (current king of the Outlands, a knight and a duke) is still coming to Ireland for two-three weeks in November after he steps down from the throne. This summer he told me he was. He's been there in the past, but this time he'd like to bring armour. :) He CANNOT authorise anyone, but he can train. (He's been king three times now -- he knows his stuff. :)

Tell Cernac to email me -- let's have all three of us in the loop -- Etienne too, and maybe Sigmundr. Remember what Etienne discussed at Champions? I've already emailed principality and kingdom. I want to talk to you guys about an idea for bringing over a knight for a weekend of training and authorising. I was thinking... if you all could arrange an event of sorts -- with several weekends from which to choose (depending on the knights' calendars), we might persuade at least one to travel. Viscount Sir Michael, who lives in my shire and I've known since the early '80s (he's from the kingdom I'm originally from :) ALMOST went to Champions -- things fell through with getting time off work.

Anyway, my idea is you guys find a site and come up with possible dates. I work with you on inviting knights from all over the kingdom, but as Ulf said, we work with the two who recently moved here from the US (hey, one's a Viscount and the other's a Count :). If possible, there's a fundraiser to help reimburse them for their travel expenses. AND offer them great hospitality. I'm thinking it will work.

But yeah -- you and Cernac, email me. :)

Oops... meant to say, we work *primarily* with the two most recent immigrants. :)

Hey, are you two thinking about traveling to Belfast in December for Yuletide -- big archery event. After Ian hit a bullseye on his second try (and he hasn't touched a bow since PE classes when he was 15), he's up for it. There are some decent fares now, so I'm thinking the credit card has some space...

(I know you won't be there, Ulf, since Harpelstane has an event that same weekend.)

Steph's going to be VERY cvlose to her final final deadline so I want to be there for her. I'm not even sure I'll go to the feast we're organising up north.
