I tend to comment as I go, though sometimes I click the link to comment and put it in another tab and go through the rest of the posts first. It depends on how urgent or immediate the need to comment is.
In this case, your post was the most recent one, and the only new one snice I last loaded.
I open things to comment on in a new tab as I go through, then comment at the end, usually. I'm more careful if it's deep emotional stuff and I'm at skip $BIGNUM.
When reading my friends pages, I comment as I go. If I have a lot of time, I make more comments; if I have little, I don't comment at all. Occasionally I don't comment on something and I get a pestering in my mind until I go back to do it next time I'm on.
When it comes to my journal, I write out everything I want to say first, and if I have time, I respond to the comments left there. ;}
I normally open up all the places I want to comment into new tabs (I love Mozilla), except when I think something is interesting enough that I want to reply NOW. Like in this case. ;)
Unless I am looking at my friend's page for a particular reason (looking for a particular LJer who I hope has posted, or to see if a discussion has more comments), I comment as I go, opening a new tab for each comment so I don't have to use the forward and back buttons.
Usually I open that post in a new window (yeah, IE. I never really did like Opera) and move on down the friends list before answering, unless it's something that has immediate emotional impact or a deadline such as "who wants to do X tonight?"
I tend to put a batch of them aside - say, everything I want to comment on from skip=25 to skip=75 - answer them in a lump, and then go on to the next set. Because I'm at skip=225 or so every damn day - if I left it to the end I'd go insane.
Usually comment as I go, tho there are times I comment later because something occurs to me as I'm reading other peoples entries. (see it is possible for me to write something without exclimation marks.)
I'm usually catching up on a backlog, so if I didn't comment as I go, by the time I get up to date, I'd most likely have forgotten which posts I wanted to comment on.
Largely hit and run, on the occasions I actually remember to check LJ, which I can manage to forget to do for days, sometimes, odd as it may seem. This may have something to do with not working with a computer, unlike virtually everyone else.

I find it amusing that you can see who uses Mozilla or Opera and who uses IE by some of the comments below. :)
