Cadre

How do you pronounce the word "cadre"? KAY-der, or should it be KAD-ray?

KAH-dre (french dreh, schwa, whatever)

I would say it KAD-reh, but then again, I don't what it means so I couldn't be sure.

Pretty close to the latter...

I've heard it pronounced KAH-der - or somewhere between that and your latter one...

Watch "Mystery Men" for a brief discussion of the pronunciation of this word :)
If I remember correctly, "Baby Bowler" pronounces it 'Kad-rah', but it's been a while :)

I've just went and listened to that and, umm, wtf? At least when the Weimar Germans pronounced Jazz "yats" it followed the spelling conventions of _German_, but "kadray" so does not follow the spelling conventions of American.

OED says /kadr/. I'd go with that.
