I'm going to try growing a beard. I'm also considering getting my hair cut short.

Beards are universally bad. Short hair is also generally ill-advised unless you have male pattern baldness (in which case a beard makes it even worse as you wind up with Clive Sinclair Migratory Hair Syndrome).

Is bollocks simply an impolite thing to say at this point or should I drop back to a more structured argument? :)

Yes, I'm massively biased (having both a beard and short/no hair), but there you go. 'Universally' is a dangerous word to use in these situations.

I come from a family of bearded men; both my father and brother sport full-face efforts. Hence beards=not sexy.

I'm just about willing to accept that goatees look good on a small subset of men, but generally, facial hair, ick!

If I was a boy I would totally have a beard. Beards are great. (I think I have beard envy)

Ignore [livejournal.com profile] valkyriekaren - beards are good, the sign of a virile and mature man. And short hair is less grabbabble in a battle.

Full beard, or goatee? I have a minor bias towards goatees, myself. Also, you *really* used the wrong user icon to talk about cutting your hair short - it looks too good in that picture to even consider!

Despite my own feelings (and comments) I do think your long hair suits you as it is. I'd certainly try the beard, the hair is a much, much bigger decision as it's going to take you a long while to grow it back. I like my hair, or lack thereof, but ymmv.

Beards of the well-kempt, nicely trimmed variety are lovely (yes, I'm biased, Forest - see icon - has a beard); no more stubble burn. Beards that get a little unruly and take over your face are less lovely though, one way I can ensure Forest keeps his beard in check is to remind him of his own father's beard, which has killed at least one pair of beard trimmers and could set up an independent existence fueled by the food particles lurking in it at times. Ick.
Not sure on the hair thing, long hair is luvverly on men
(of course, I don't know you very well, have only a vague idea of how you look and have no reason to expect you to take *my* views on things, I'm just feeling chatty this afternoon :) )

I note that the vast majority of "pro" voices are bearded men. The question is, are these the people you're going to be trying to impress?

Doing something to impress someone is a faintly repulsive concept, outside of interviews and the like.

If I try a beard, it'll be to see what it feels like - if it's more comfortable, and not objected to by [livejournal.com profile] inannajones, then it'll stay. Otherwise, off with it.

Beware - they get very itchy before they go nice and soft and curly. You have to brave the bad time to get to the good - a bit like growing your hair.

Don't do anything with the hair yet, grow the beard by all means, go full-face first and trim back to suit. It takes a bloody long time to grow hair as long as yours, be sure it's what you (and she!) want before cutting anything. BTW try long hair and beard it might work!

Careful with the haircut - if you decide you don't like it you're going to sorry. As someone who's been trying to grow theirs out from a buzz cut, I can assure you that the intermediate stages of enormous fluffiness are hideous.

The beard could be hot on you, though.

I cut my hair two weeks ago, and I still feel nekkid. Personally, I cry when a guy with long hair cuts it short, but I'll keep my opinion to "Think long and hard about cutting off your hair."

Beards can be nice when done right.

I used to have long hair that I eventually snipped (it's growing back just now). It was a long case of being very annoyed by it, hopefully in the next few years when it grows back to the length I had it'll feel better than it did back then.

As for beards, well it takes about 2 weeks or so for me to have a good feel of what it looks like. I've settled on my style for now, but I may very well decide to change it in a few months if I feel like it. Great things they are beards, you can sculpt them if they grow well enough :)

*mind boggles* o_O
I just can't imagine you with a beard and short hair. And for some reason whenever we talk about beards, I get this image of a Santa-like giant tuft of hair, and that's just...ick. A shorter, CLEAN beard might look good on you. Still can't imagine you with a beard, though.

And think carefully about cutting your hair. As many have said, if you decide you want it long again, it's going to be painful as hell to grow it back. Take it from someone who knows. I've been growing mine out since summer and currently it's in that horrible state where it's neither short nor long and is absolutely dreadful to manage. I curse and almost rip it out daily, and have to always be mindful of not rushing to a hairdresser and telling her to cut it all away.

But anyway, if growing a beard and cutting your hair short is what you want to do, by all means do it, see what it's like. :)

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too many short haired guys in the world already...you CAN'T join them!

But as for the beard...yeah, try it if you like...
