100 Best, continued...
21. Mushroom Soup: I just had a large bowl, so that brings it up in the mind. Preferably cream of mushroom soup, made from fresh field mushrooms. Best made by my father, actually.
22. Thunder: I love thunderstorms. I've seen some beauties, but none so good as the 26-hour-long, four-combined-thunderstorms last year.
23. Cold: Probably goes hand in hand with "Snow", from part one, but it's worth mentioning on it's own. I adore the sensation of cold, and response of my body to it. I'm almost always warm myself, so someone else's cold hands can be a great pleasure.
24. Wing-back Armchairs: I don't actually own one, but I will. Preferably velvet upholstery, but the important bit is the shortish seat, the tall straight back, and the wings enclosing your shoulders. A good wing-back is like a little alcove all of its own.
25. Sandalwood Incense: This is one of those smells that just plain appeals. I don't have strong associations for it; I just like it. A lot.
26. Rocks: I did some geology in college, and it's left me enthused ever afterward about rocks. Plain ones, pretty ones, solid ones, soft ones, granites and limstones and sandstones and breccias and minerals and gems and fossils, and pretty much anything below the soil.
27. Leather: Scent, texture, and look. Leather doesn't look too good on me, unfortunately, but I like it on other people, on furniture, or just in small pieces. I used to keep a few scraps in my pockets just so the scent would adhere to my fingers.
28. Astrolabes: This extends to all brass mechanics, really; astrolabes and compasses and clocks and barometers and orreries and sundials. The look of brass cogs has a lot to do with my liking for steampunk, I think.
29. Stew: There's nothing like a good Irish stew, and I make a pretty good one myself. Family method, although there's nothing too different about it.
30. Cats: Cats are great. All cats, really - I'll stop to talk to a cat before I'll stop for some relatives. They seem to like me, too, which has always pleased me. Dogs like pretty much anyone, but cats are choosy.
31. Candlelight: I know this goes with what I said about flames before, but the light from candles is worthy of special mention. It's softer, more pleasant, and somehow more human than any other light I know.
32. Fractals: I like details, complexity, and colours. Fractals cover these very nicely.
33. Weather: I'm mildly obsessive about weather - precise temperatures, wind direction, and the effort to predict what's coming next. It's been wrong a lot here lately. The prediction, that is, not the weather.
34. Warm Blankets: Despite my liking for cold, there's very little to match the feeling of being under warm blankets, or a warm duvet, or warm anything, when it's cold outside, or when you can hear the wind.
35. Autumn: Although I like snow most of all weathers, autumn is my favourite season. Colours and scents - woodsmoke! - and the first frost, and autumn fruits.
36. Edinburgh: There are other cities I like - Dublin is one of them, and so is Leeds, and I like London. But Edinburgh remains different, special, just not the same kind of place as other cities.
37. Eating Outside: Food is just better eaten outside. It's twice as good if it's cooked outside too. Given my preferences, I'd eat in the back garden all the time, but the Irish climate doesn't really allow for that.
38. Undead: As monsters for RPGs go, undead are wonderful. They can be evil, scheming, intelligent undead, benevolent ghosts, mindless ghouls and zombies... more of a range than you get with any other monster type. Someday, I'm going to run a whole campaign about nothing but undead.
39. Maps: Real or fictional, colour or plain, town or country, land or sea.... I don't mind. The coding of place onto paper has always fascinated me, and in a perverse way, so has the notion that some people need to be taught to read them - I've always just been able.
40. Icons: Livejournal, desktop, Russian orthodox, doesn't matter. The miniaturisation of image, concept, word, iconography, all there in one small place. Good icons are a great pleasure.
