People. Big Brother. For the sake of my sanity, and your bodily safety, STOP. It is inane. It is stupid. And it is, for some reason, all OVER the place. It's very rare I get as far as objecting vocally to something going on near or around me, because normally I'm pretty well able to ignore idiocy, but this is taking the idiocy in from the rain and dressing it in velvet robes. GET A GRIP.

Uhh... oh. Sorry. Big Brother is a television series/"real life"/24-hour-cameras-plus-highlights-every-day/reality TV/phone-vote extravaganza thing that's just started up again in the UK, and is being shown on Channel 4 (I think). It's truly dreadful, and many people I know are, well, watching it in the first place, and becoming obsessive about it to boot.

Oh.
Yeah, I don't watch the tube except for prerecorded stuff I want to see.

Sorry to hear it's annoying...

Neither do I, by and large. The only broadcast stuff I've seen in a long time has been news. But this is *everywhere*.

Yes, Channel 4. And E4 on Sky and cable.

I don't watch it. The most I see of it is a second or two whilst running through channels. Hates it, Baggins, I do. Reality TV is so unreal; it needs to die.

Wheeeew! I was clicking on everything in your original post... Not getting taken anywhere else... Thus not knowing _what_ you were talking about... And naturally, thinking I was cut out of your loop. [Boohoo]

But no! No one was 'cut out' and I wasn't the only one who didn't know what you were referring to!!! >,-)

never mind. There's still a way on in Iraq, you know.
Oh, and did you hear the one about the anti-EU party that got elected to the European Parliament? Oh how we laughed...

The world's going to hell in a handbasket, and all people give a damn about is oil and circuses.

You can vote in this particular circus though, and your votes make a difference to who stays and goes unlike in an election. More to the point it's a show that is encouraging people to talk - granted not about the deepest topic ever but there are folks out there who are now having lengthy conversations where before they'd manage a grunt and folks are learning to analyze behaviour in other people.

Or to put it another way: it's better than the fucking football

Yes, less engaging in the art of conversation would make the world a better place. Furthermore we should avoid facilitating people with a common topic (which has everything - scandal, controversy, sex, violence) on the offchance that they start building bridges, making friends, finding other common interests and reaching out to their fellow man in a manner which may well be very small but as we know, every little helps (or doesn't, depending on how much sarcasm I pour on there).
I'd like to think that people are also watching the behaviour exhibited on the show and maybe examining their own actions but I get the feeling that the show has less effect on introspection than it does on providing conversation pieces.

I do admit to watching some of the Euro2004, quite entertaining so far actually. The English goal yesterday that went cornerpost - goalie's head - in had a certain something ;-)

As to BB I find it rather easy to ignore since I mostly watch Discovery channel in one flavour or another.

My housemate is crazy about it, so I end up absorbing it unavoidably by osmosis, and the thing that amazes me most about it is how these people have managed to survive for so many years when they're so very stupid.

I mean, they have to have everything explained to them three times, they can't construct a sentence, they run round in circles going 'eeeeeeeee' for a quarter of an hour at a time... my rats are cleverer than most of them, ffs.

Hmm, most of the contestants have above-average looks and at least half of them are intelligent and articulate (or can at least put on a good show of it) with the remainder being fairly average people.
For the average viewer there's not a great deal there to feel superior to.
