gothwalk: (hope springs eternally from my fist)

[livejournal.com profile] inannajones and I are intending to spend a good chunk of the day in front of the Live 8 concert being broadcast from Hyde Park in London. We've also got laptops here, so expect a fair bit of posting.

One of the major parts of Live 8 is the petition. Sign Here.

I'd like Live 8 to make a difference, and it's having the effect it's supposed to here at least - I'm thinking about the issues it's raising, poverty and global economies. There are some rumblings going on in the back of my head about the notion of anti-globalisation movement, which strikes me as a set of concepts that isn't going anywhere. I'd like to know what it's about before I dismiss it altogether. So tell me about it, please?

Good grief, Bill Gates just walked on stage...

Pass 'em on, I'll read 'em. I'm interested in getting an overview, a summary of the movement, though. At a glance, it's people protesting about something they don't understand - I'd like to hope it's something more.

The title Another World Is Possible If... sounds hopeful in that respect. Are these books available as online texts?

Sure, as long as you don't mind being turfed out at a not-too-late hour - [livejournal.com profile] olethros is away, and we intend to make the best of having the house to ourselves. :)

My understanding is that, officially, globalisation is about free trade, removing trade barriers, etc, but that in practice it's the powerful countries making poorer countries remove import barriers and import the powerful countries' exports, while the powerful countries keep their import tariffs/barriers and production subsidies. Anti-globalisation people (or at least a proportion of them) would be against the "fake" globalisation. There are anti-globalisationists who are pro-globalisation :-)

that makes sense. An I am hugely pro-globalisation in the sense of fair trade. I am actually betting my future on it ;)

Blair is so correct in attempting to modify the EU's agricultural policy.

At the moment we have no reception so I'm going to dig out my Live Aid DVDs and watch them instead :)
