I read about all you Irish complaining about the heat. heeeee! Isn't it only like 25 degrees there?
We broke 40 yesterday, and that's sheer temperature alone. Some weather reports were saying it broke 50 degrees if you count the humidity factor.
It's only dropping to about 25/24 degrees overnight. I pity everyone in Toronto who doesn't have a/c right about now.
But I guess for you lot, you're not used to much over 20 degrees at all, even on a good day (which is like, what, twice a year?) So I feel for you too.
I thankfully have a/c. But it's not as widespread as most of you think. My good friend lives in a tiny apartment with no a/c in sight. She has a small window unit, but they honestly don't do a thing in this weather.
Technically, we're not allowed to use our a/c since overuse of electricity in such heat is what brought on the massive blackout 2 years ago which covered most of ontario, new york, and other areas.
The govermnet opens up lobbies of under-used office buildings in the downtown core to distribute water to homeless people, and the elderly. Wide-spread warnings are issued for people to not leave their homes unless they have to.
It nears a crisis when it's this hot. It just so happens that this heat has lasted for two months without hardly any rain, which is rare. We usually only get three or four heat-wave weeks per summer.
I've tried proper hot in Boston, and that was pretty bad. But it had the courtesy to exhaust me, so I could at least sleep. This isn't (or wasn't, it's cooler today) hot enough to tire me properly, just enough to prevent sleep.
It's not quite as good as it used to be - in college, I could sleep sitting up on an office chair, and I think I managed to doze off standing up once. Certainly I can sleep through almost anything in the way of incidental noise. But heat will stop me getting to sleep all the same.
anyone who's read my journal sees it's mostly updated at 5am! insomnia certainly does suck. and the heat is not helping recently. having said that we just booked a two week holiday in sunny Zakynthos!! at least we have beach, pool etc there!
