Does anyone know of a place within bus range or a short drive from Dublin where blackberries can be picked? I seem to recall they'll be coming into season soon, and I have a notion of making jam.
Yeah, they're good, mostly undisturbed hedgerows. However, playing on the train tracks isn't safe anywhere anywhere near Dublin - trains aren't at predictable times, and are often hard to hear coming.
In my neighborhood, the tracks have a fairly wide right-of way, with the hedges and greenery trimmed back a good 4-5m on either side. Plenty of room to pick berries without having to worry about getting squashed by a freight train.
There's a bus, right? And you have blackberries? Sounds like a plan. It'll be an expedition anyway; having someone at the end who knows the area would be a good thing.
Yes, there's a bus. We're not complete savages (yet). I'll have a look round the area when I get back from hols to see how they're doing (this time of year is a little early yet). So I'll let you know, and we can get something organised.

Anyway, we're coming up on blackberry season in my area, too. Which certainly doesn't help you much.
However, I've found that you can sometimes luck out along railroad tracks. Thorny berry bushes seem to do quite well in that environment.

Mind you, it's about 25 years since I've been blackberrying there - the brambles may have been all dug up and built on, for all I know!
