My boots are falling to bits - mainly by wearing through the inner soles to the, uh, structural stuff below, but also developing some tears in other places. Therefore I wish to buy new boots. I don't much want the pain of breaking in Docs or the like. New Rocks are too expensive, somewhat impractical, and make me look like a combat-specced dwarf. I'd like them to last well, and be comfortable. I'm not much bothered about how they look (beyond the desire not to look as if I should have braids in my beard) - work has no dress code whatsoever, and if I need to look respectable, I have Respectable Shoes for just that purpose. I would prefer black to brown or grey, but that's a minor point.

Should I just go buy myself some hiking boots, or is there another brand or type I should be looking for?

I just had the same dilema. I took myself to the army bargains shop just off capel st (beside the AIB) and got myself a pair of hiking boots. They cost E70 (on promotion, full price is E85). Made of black waxed leather, so they're waterproof about half way up their height, which is over the ankle, and took about three days for my feet to break into them.
And they're so cosy...

I'm still a big fan of the old style german army para boot (copper coloured eyelets). Fairly heavy, long lasting and more importantly they come in black. Not as big, or sometimes as impractical, as new rocks.

I'd say go for Timberland, mine have lasted years and that included wearing them every day for work through 2 winters.

Actually now I remember it, they survived 3 Lostprophets mosh pits as well...

I tend to wear Magnum combat boots... relatively cheap, long lasting and quite comfy. Come in Black.

My Red Wings have lasted longer than any other boots I've ever owned, including Timberland. They're not cheap, though.

I'll second the redwings - at my airport, many of the maintenance and custodial guys wear them. They have no break-in period, and are comfy even when you spend 8 hours walking on concrete and granite. (Even comfier with good socks)

They are pricey - but it's worth the price.

I had a pair of Matterhorns for 7 years and 6 of those years was every day duty Use.

I have worn Lands End boots for several hundred miles of walking. They wear very well and are easily broken in.

They're an American company, so if you didn't want to pay VAT and the like, ship them to my house and [livejournal.com profile] smarriveurr and I will finagle something.

Cowboy boots

I had a pair of cowboy boots a while back, apart from some damage on the heel they were fine, mind you their was the tappy noise they made while I walked (felt like my life was one big Clint Eastwood movie) also my sexuality got questioned a bit as well.

But five out of five for comfort, waterproofness and going well with anything except my underwear and combats.

Other than that I'm going to have to go with the Timberland vote, maybe you should start a poll ?
