gothwalk: (Music - System of a Down)

We have a new shared music drive in work, and enthusiasm for playlists is starting to pick up. I've been asked to work out a "Best of Grunge" playlist, to match the "90s Singles" one there already. So, what would you include on such a playlist? Don't be shy about suggesting obvious classics, either, because it's entirely possible I'll have missed them.

Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
Pearl Jam - Jeremy

Those are the first that come to mind ...

NIN Head Like A Hole
Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit

Good luck!

From: [identity profile] sares2000.livejournal.com

Amen to that, Teen Spirit is IMO the definitive song of its times.

any Metallica, Deftones, Pantera, definitely NIN, couple of Rage Against the Machine.

From: [identity profile] nightmares-fear.livejournal.com

Well I think that was always going to be the case. However, the bands I mentioned should ALWAYS be included on playlists - of any kind!

I care little for grunge, I'm afraid - but I'd be curious to know what's on the 90s singles playlist. Have you got Winamp or anything that could easily make a playlist that you could stick up? If you wouldn't mind, of course.

Thanks! Yeah, I remember Winamp being able to export to HTML too. I was looking to see if there were any songs on your list that I might like for my own playlist at home. Alas I either have everything on the list or don't want the remainder (with the exception of the Boo Radleys song, which I don't especially like, but got hooked on in a have-to-listen-to-it-to-get-it-out-of-my-head kinda way).

Cartoons - Witch Doctor would get stuck in my head if I could remember the nonsense lyric. I'd never heard it before, though.

From: [identity profile] nightmares-fear.livejournal.com

I told the witch doctor I was in love with you
And then the witch doctor he told me what to do
He told me: Ooh eeh ooh ah ah, Ting Tang Walla Walla Bing Bang
Ooh eeh ooh ah ah, Ting Tang Walla Walla Bing Bang!

:-) Happy Friday!

(Janey Mack the 90s seem to have sucked for music! I'd remembered it as being much better.)

Wench. :)

Janey Mack the 90s seem to have sucked for music! I'd remembered it as being much better.

Well, do note that this list is short all the grunge, metal, harder rap and electronica that constitute good music (from whatever point of view; I can't stand rap) - in short, it's pop with the worst crud removed (2Unlimited don't feature, for instance). No sign here of Nirvana, REM, Smashing Pumpkins, The Prodigy... maybe I should just do up a whole rival "REAL Best of the 90s" listing. :)

Dont forgat any Alice in Chains stuff... Probably It aint like that or Them Bones.

From: (Anonymous)

Pretty much just seconding others: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains.
Temple of the Dog. Hole?

Some things I don't think are grunge; NIN, Presidents of the USA. But you could morph stuff like that in there, along with groups like Belly, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Crash Test Dummies, Concrete Blonde, Four Non Blondes, the Lemonheads, etc. simply for a feel of that time period.

From: [identity profile] whitecrow0.livejournal.com

OH! Stone Temple Pilots. *cringe* (Not my thing) Soul Asylum and Living Color also aren't grunge, but can kind of fit to round things out.

I have no idea why my first comment is credited to Anonymous. I was logged in. o.O

From: [identity profile] bluedevi.livejournal.com

Pearl Jam - Nothing Man, Stone Temple Pilots - Creep, are the Pixies grunge? if so Debaser or Wave of Mutilation or Monkey Gone To Heaven, anything off the Nirvana Unplugged In New York album (Dumb?)...

Breeders - Cannonball?

How're you doing, btw?

I'm doin' good. Expect a general update and return to more frequent posting over the weekend.

Evening time, quite possibly. :)

Although it always takes me a few minutes these days to work out where "back" is for you - Dublin, Oxford, or if you're temporarily in Manila or Rio, but will have proper net access when you;re back to Benelux. :)

From: [identity profile] bluedevi.livejournal.com

I know, and here I was planning to be nice and settled and not budge out of Oxford for a while. Oh well. And bah/hurrah for people with cars :)

I may have to erk at you a bit. In a good way. I think.

I'm on google talk at the moment, if you've access to that. Or there's that old-fangled email thing.

Thank you, but I may have to leave here in a hurry.

(not in any scary way, I hasten to add, just I'm expecting to have to go somewhere as soon as mine host returns from work which is Real Soon Now)

Personally, I despised grunge. It was just this unrelenting stream of crap that emanated from Seattle.

From: [identity profile] suibhne-geilt.livejournal.com

It was the music of the halcyon days of my college years. I seriously want a do-over on the soundtrack.

a few contributions...

Screaming Trees- I Nearly Lost You
Candlebox- Left You Far Behind
Blind Melon- No Rain

Gin Blossoms - Found Out About You
Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
Goo Goo Dolls - Name
Alice in Chains - Rooster, Heaven Beside You
Stone Temple Pilots - Interstate Love Song

From: [identity profile] microgirl.livejournal.com

I'd say other Pearl Jam songs rather than "Jeremy". It's the one everyone remembers, but I don't consider it as "grungey" (why, I don't know)

But "Once", "Even Flow" and "Black" I'd stick in there

From: [identity profile] aidian.livejournal.com

let me check the remains of my old grunge playlist...
Nirvana - Heart-shaped box (in utero)
Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit (nevermind) (not my favorite song, but better be in there for completeness)
Nirvana - In Bloom (nevermind)
Nirvana - The man who sold the world (unplugged) (anything from that album)
Alice in Chains - Sick man (anything off of Dirt, as well)
Butthole Surfers - Who was in my room last night? (independent worm saloon)
Butthole Surfers - You don't know me (independent worm saloon)
(not seattle grunge, but in the same timeframe and very close.. good)
Soundgarden - The day i tried to live (superunknown)
Soundgarden - Superunknown (superunknown)
Soundgarden - Black hole sun (superunknown)
Silverchair - Tomorrow (hell if i know)
Toadies - Possum Kingdom (possum kingdom)
PJ Harvey - My naked cousin (crow 2 soundtrack) (haha! but it fits.)
Jerry Cantrell - cut you in (solo album, i dunno) (ish, really)
L7 - Pretend that you're dead (dunno)
You may also try slipping in some Audioslave. it's from the 2000's, but it's chris cornell from soundgarden and sounds pretty 90's. try "Like a Stone". Dunno any songs, but I remember listening to the Germs too, and maybe some Dinosaur Jr.

Don't know if these are considered grunge, but songs I like that I feel are in the "Alternative" vein

Prodigy--Firestarter
Metallica--Enter Sandman

Anything on the soundtracts to "Reality Bites" and similar movies.
and there are more, but I have to go home and look at my playlists...

From: [identity profile] jadedgeneration.livejournal.com

The Smashing Pumpkins? The got lumped in there with Peral Jam and Nirvana back in the old school days. I dunno what precisely to define them as though.

From: [identity profile] bethynyc.livejournal.com

ok I know I don't look like a crazed metalhead alterna-girl, but here's a list for you.
