I just came across a truly excellent post titled A Nerd In A Cave, which explains a great deal about geek space, both physical and mental.

I think "comforting nerd knick-knacks" may also extend to a 'comfortable' level of messiness in a workspace. smarriveurr's desk is continually covered in crap, the presence of most of which I really can't explain, nor does my neat-freak brain really want to confront it. I only feel authorised to remove dirty dishes and strewn socks. Disrupting the messiness in his space results in passive-aggressive hostility, I've learned.
