Here're a few questions about announcement and site news mailing lists, because my mailing list for dukestreet.org has very few subscribers, and I would like to have more. Also, I'm just plain curious.

A couple thoughts for your input, since you're asking. :)

I subscribe to announcement lists very, very rarely. Needing the content is 100% why I do at all. Usually it's for things that I'm not going to check a website for regularly, like a piece of software that patches or updates every month or three. Inside information or special content is a big draw - I don't want to know about a "big product announcement" three weeks after I've read it on digg, or even on the main website. If the change to a site doesn't affect the content or usage in a major way, I don't really care to know about it by email - I'll find out if and when I go back on the web. If the mail offers a chance to participate and give input ahead of the pack, though, I like that kind of thing via email.

For discussion lists, I almost always get them by digest daily, and I tend to want fairly rigidly defined topics. It has to be something fairly discussable or debatable for me to want to join, and again I stay away from them unless they're -really- interesting. I've actually been trying to find some good lists to join lately, but there aren't many left - lots of stuff has moved over to forums these days, which come with their own set of crockery and crap.

As for your list specifically, what's it got? There aren't any details on dukestreet about what the list is besides "news and announcements"... What kind? How often? Is there an archive? Is it anything I could get from just going to the website? Is it a discussion list, or is it just occasional briefs from you?

Hope that helps. :)
