I may have been ranting here before about how damn cool the Baen Free Library is. The notion is that if people can read some books for free, they may buy other books by the same author that much more quickly, and may even buy the same books they just read for free so as to have them in hard copy. So Baen put up lots of books there - and it seems to be working for them.
Now, the latest Honor Harrington book - War of Honor - has a data CD with it. The CD contains e-texts of all the books in the series to date, including the short story anthologies, plus high-res images of covers and starmaps, plus ten other books published by Baen. And y'know what the best bit is? They WANT you to copy and share it, as long as you don't sell it. You can put it up for download. You can post it to usenet - indeed, someone already has, and Jim Baen himself says it's OK. You can copy, print, give away, whatever.
Baen are one smart company, and I for one will be buying more of their books for two reasons - one, their authors are good, and two - the more they make from people buying stuff, the more free stuff they'll put up/give away.
