Open Novel: Writing Sample

open_design pointed out that a writing sample might help convince people that I can string enough words together to produce something useful.

So here we go: Nebbish's Demon.

For those of you who didn't like the pricing structure I suggested, what would you like?

A point I didn't make clear is that if I turn out to be unable for one reason or another to finish the novel, or provide significant progress, in a reasonable time, everyone will get their money back. The actual metrics for that are subject to discussion with the Tier 3 people and voting by the rest, but I'm thinking that producing, say, eighty thousand plus words, deemed by the patrons at large to be halfway decent, inside a year, would be a useful measure.

(Part of my brain says, "Hah! I can churn out 40k words in a month!", and another part is going "You're mad. Bedbug. Hatter. Insane." We'll find out who's right, I suppose.)

I presume you've looked at Greg Stolze's ransom schemes and fundible and stuff?

Both are interesting, and I'd definitely consider using them (Ransom through fundable.com, I think) if I had a finished work I wanted to get out there. I think the most interesting bit of this, though, is the different levels of participation along the way, which neither of those really allow for.

I've seen something simnilar to this done before (is it at the Creative Commons site?) where the money paid to the author is put into escrow until such time as the work is completed.

Somehow, NaNoWriMo provides less impetus. On the other hand, I might take it on as a proof of concept for this project...

I was planning to come up with a few new ideas, and let patrons choose, but I'm now giving some consideration to finishing Nebbish's Demon as a NaNoWriMo project, for proof of concept.

And I might just keep writing on it anyway...
