Can someone explain why people in Ireland react to the idea of -28° with horror, and then joke about wearing long underwear? They look bemused when I say that yes, I was wearing long underwear. I'm tellin' ya, this country is doomed when the next Ice Age comes.

Well, we DO currently have nearly 2 feet of snow on the ground, and it's STILL snowing, and the city has not slowed down.

it's been colder than -6 here...
At the weekend it was -8 here. I think that's as cold as it normally gets in Ireland.
I've been in -40 - in Boston and New York 10 years ago, during an unseasonably cold winter. It was harsh.

But it's only laughed at here because it's never really necessary. Trust me, if we started constantly getting winters with temperatures regularly -10 or below, people would start wearing longjohns within 2-3 winters. Maybe even halfway throught the first :)
