Can someone explain why people in Ireland react to the idea of -28° with horror, and then joke about wearing long underwear? They look bemused when I say that yes, I was wearing long underwear. I'm tellin' ya, this country is doomed when the next Ice Age comes.

It's -28 there? Damn, -28 in *Canada* is a friggin cold day. In Ireland I'll bet the whole country shuts down like it does when you get a centimeter of snow!

No, no. :) It was -28 in Finland. I don't recall anything below -6 here, ever. -28 and the whole country would just decamp to Spain.

Re:

Oh damn, I must have skipped over the Finland part. *whew* and I thought you'd all get a taste of what I go through once or twice a winter here. :)

Well, we DO currently have nearly 2 feet of snow on the ground, and it's STILL snowing, and the city has not slowed down.

it's been colder than -6 here...

It hit -14 in the North about 6 years ago, I was up there and it quite shocking. There was no wind though, so there wasn't much of a wind chill to make any worse. There was air coming down from the Arctic and it was something of a freak occurence.

At the weekend it was -8 here. I think that's as cold as it normally gets in Ireland.

I've been in -40 - in Boston and New York 10 years ago, during an unseasonably cold winter. It was harsh.

sell long underwear. I have worn longjohns for years, especially when living in accomodation with no heating and no insulation.

Cold

The worst it gets in this country is about -16 C and that's in some isolated areas, We had -10 C in Dublin last year in January.

Heh, I was just thinking this today. It's something I think regularly. About how it would be lovely to be in a country that is so cold you could wear big, padded, naff-looking warm coats and scarves and gloves and hats and furry boots and longjohns and thermal underwear without being looked on as a freak because you have to wear 'em or you'll die. Not to be there *because* it's cold, like you, but because, perversely, I'd be warm. Cos I could wear warm enough clothes without being laughed at :)

But it's only laughed at here because it's never really necessary. Trust me, if we started constantly getting winters with temperatures regularly -10 or below, people would start wearing longjohns within 2-3 winters. Maybe even halfway throught the first :)
