A pro-war viewpoint, quoted with permission:

War for oil? Ok by me. Human rights abuses aren't enough to justify a war.

And this isn't taken out of context - the surrounding text was to back it up. A later reply confirmed that yes, the writer regards their own comfort as more important than the lives of others.

I'm kind of stunned by this - left staggered, mentally, unable to respond to something so alien to my own morality. There's something wrong with a world where someone can grow up thinking like that.

And that's when I wonder about humanity in general. Of course, selfishness is part of humanity. I can be pretty self-centred at times also. But not *that* self-centred. ;)

But I guess I'd still help out that person if he/she was in need. Makes me stupid? Nah. It makes me human. :)

I used to tell students (jokingly) that everyone was entitled to their own opinions, no matter how dumb they were. ;)

My brother-in-law told me, while he was here around the holidays, that he wasn't concerned by US civil liberties being eroded. It hadn't affected him yet. There are a lot of people who share that attitude. And my brother-in-law isn't a bad person; he's a caring individual. But he's wrapped up in his world, as we all are. I guess I like to think I include a lot of other people in my little world.

Yeah, I can't help but laugh when people say, "Well, I don't have anything to worry about, why should I care if they see my library records/monitor my internet use/etc." My response is usually, "How do you know you don't have anything to worry about?" I think they think I'm paranoid, but...

I'm not really into the idea of war at all, but I will say that I'm a hell of a lot more worried about human rights abuses in Iraq than I am about the price of gasoline.
