Something that occasionally ticks me off about slash fanfic - why do people write stories where everyone is gay? The statistical likelihood is, uh, low, and it does rather strain the suspension of disbelief.

And since I know that there are several fanfic writers, readers, and participants reading this, can someone recommend some decent plot-heavy, romance-light fanfic in any of: Harry Potter, X-Men, X-Files, B5, ST:TNG or ST:DS9, or Star Wars? And if such things exist, Diane Duane, Barabara Hambly, or Chine Mieville fanfic would be very welcome.

I'm afraid I can't make any recommendations, but as a reader of slash and yaoi fiction I feel I must chime in here.

Admittedly I'm rather picky in my reading, and so I probably haven't read any of the fiction you're complaining about. From the stuff I've read, most of the guys aren't gay -- they're bisexual. I've even read a few stories in which one or both of the guys in question identifies as straight, and is still uncomfortable about the "episode" before and afterwards.

Even in original fiction, for which the characters can be any damn thing the author wants, there are still several bi guys.

Heh. The first "slash" fiction I ever read was before there was such a thing as slash, per se--it was a book called something like, "The Erotic Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". Holmes and Watson, of course, were gay. So was Moriarty. So were the cops that our heroes worked with. So were the other villains (you don't want to think about how he did the killings in "A study in Scarlet". You just don't). Watson's wife was a boy. And Mrs Hudson was a man in drag! Not only were there no straight men in Victorian London, there were apparantly no women at all!

No straight men in Victorian London?

Oscar Wilde would've loved that, I'm sure. ::giggle::

you don't know me, but I saw your post and. . .
Give me Plot too!!!! Please! I don't mind romance, and I actually prefer slash fics if I'm reading romance, because my favorite characters are allmost allways male and I love watching them interact- which they do much more in slash fics, ususally, and because straight romance allmost allways follows a set pattern which gets boaring the 39874th time (Ok, slash is doing it a lot now too, but it didn't so much before.) BUT, I MAINLY want to read PLOT!! Give me politics, give me secret missions, give me history and science. All the romance fics are making it harder and harder to find plot heavy fics, and I for one consider it quite sad. . . I'm vaugely considering starting a plot fic archive, but I don't have the time... I'll let you know if I do, or if I find one somewhere.
