I have to go out shortly to Dun Laoghaire's sport shops and other such places, and look for a weight-lifter's belt. This is not because I intend to do anything concerning weights, but because such a beast is the ideal chunk of armour for protecting the kidneys. I know I saw such things in sports shops in town, anyway, and I'm hoping it won't be TOO hard to find.

Tonight, I get all strapped up in full armour, and I may even get to actually try this fighting thing for real, with the hitting and getting hit, in advance of Champions of Logh Devnaree at the weekend.

I've also only just remembered (after [livejournal.com profile] inannajones reminded me) that I have a great-kilt, which will cover at least a day's garb for the weekend. Plain tunic and trousers for the rest, and that big black hooded cloak in case it's cold.

OTOH you could go to a motorcycle shop and get a kidney belt, which is designed for just that purpose.

How much-ish? I don't know if there are any bike shops near here, though...

Dunno tbh, but you could try Maddock's in Bray - they're not amazingly far I don't think. (+353) 1-286 8418 / info@maddock.ie

Are you wanting the belt to go on underneath armour, so as to protect your kidneys that way, or does it have to go over the top? Bikers' kidney belts go underneath, usually, unless you want a motocrosser's belt - the idea is you have your jacket on over them, and possibly a spine protector between the kidney belt and the jacket. They come in neoprene and leather mainly.

Underneath. I got a thick nylon weight-lifter's belt as a stopgap; I'll drop into the Gem and see if they have something more solid sometime soon.

Will you be taking any photos while there? And posting them here for us to appreciate? }8-)

We'll do our best. :) The digital camera holds about 32 shots, and as long as I don't start taking closeups of other people's armour, that should be enough for a flavour of the event.
