When people from the office here go to Canada, they traditionally bring back a large bag of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Eating these things always disturbs me a bit, and I have just worked out why: I can never tell, as I bite into them, whether I have removed the wrapper or not. I don't care what you do to chocolate, but it should be impossible to give it that texture.

The texture of the chocolate doesn't bother me; I'm American, so I'm used to chocolate-flavored paraffin. Mind you, I only enjoy it when combined with other flavors (PB, caramel, etc.) -- If I want real, pure chocolate, I'll skip the big industrial brands. It's the texture (dry and gritty) of the peanut butter in Reese's that almost makes me avoid them. The taste is still just above acceptable, though.

The Wal-Mart chain of mega retail stores is evil, but they do sell a store-brand peanut butter cup that kicks Reese's ass. Better chocolate (warning: watch that higher melting point), and the PB is smooth and creamy. I don't know how extensively Wal-Mart has colonized Canada, but if you know someone travelling stateside soon, you might ask them to look for it.

So, are there no mass-market chocolate-covered peanut butter candies available on your side of the pond?

Not that I can think of. Peanut M&Ms are the closest we come. We're not that gone on peanut butter much, anyway. I quite like it, but it's still an exotic, and not the first or even third thing I'd reach for.
