Y'know, the BBC try hard to remain fairly un-editorial in their reporting. But I suspect they're taking the piss a little here: Backpacker's 'smart' trek to safet.

Not to be nasty, now, but I've known how to follow streams downhill since I was, what, five? It's not exactly a difficult concept. And "almost impossible" to get out? Sorry, it looks to me like a not-very-bright teenager walked out, which doesn't seem impossible.

Hmmm. Following a watercourse downhill is a Very Bad Thing To Do on a mountain. Water likes to take the steepest route down, and it's quite possible to suddenly find yourself half-way down a (wet) cliff. (This is entirely different to following a watercourse in gentle terrain, where it is pretty much guaranteed to lead to civilisation).

She was, I agree, a silly moo for going hiking alone without whistle, compass and mirror.

..and, of course, a map.

The other thing to remember is that in areas with Vicious Wildlife (such as Australia, the Amazon Basin, Putney, etc), don't camp /too/ near a water source at night, because every other fanged, toothed and envenomed little bugger will be having exactly that idea.
