Not to be nasty, now, but I've known how to follow streams downhill since I was, what, five? It's not exactly a difficult concept. And "almost impossible" to get out? Sorry, it looks to me like a not-very-bright teenager walked out, which doesn't seem impossible.

The other thing to remember is that in areas with Vicious Wildlife (such as Australia, the Amazon Basin, Putney, etc), don't camp /too/ near a water source at night, because every other fanged, toothed and envenomed little bugger will be having exactly that idea.
