Books bought over the weekend include: Jon Courtenay Grimwood's Effendi (I haven't read anything of his before, but I think I like), and Lois McMaster Bujold's The Curse of Chalion. And I'm currently reading Kim Stanley Robinson's The Years of Rice and Salt, which is bloody brilliant, really.

Overheard in Waterstone's on Dawson Street, woman in smart business suit, speaking of The Years of Rice and Salt: "I was going to get it, but then I saw he was into science fiction and stuff, so I didn't want to look like a nerd." I'm not sure if "he" was KSR or some other bloke...

Verdict

Effendi is better than Grimwood's other stuff IMO. More tightly plotted, less overtly trendy and easier to suspend disbelief for. El Eskandriya is bidding to be one of my favourite fictional cities.

Is Effendi the second Arabesque book? I really like Grimwood, but finding him over here is pretty touch.

Nicely spotted

Gothwalk - you'll want to read the one before it - Pashazade: The First Arabesk. I have it if you want to borrow.

That's an awful attitude to have about a book. Granted I don't read a lot of genre's because they're just not what I'm into, but acting like the type of book you read has more influence on you than the type of book you're into is just ridiculous.

I haven't read Grimwood (I don't think, anyway), but I have bothe the other ones and adore tha authors, so I've been "saving" them. Lately I have been actually reading some of my "saved" books, though, so I may get to them soon... Although pagans are largely thought to be very hedonistic, I'm into delayed gratification, obviously!
