Hey, [livejournal.com profile] silme and [livejournal.com profile] loupblanc, what're your SCA names? We ran into some SCA folks here at the weekend, and it looks like we might finally get around to joining.

Hey Great News

My SCA name is Lord Ulf de Fribois, I'm the only French in the whole uk and I'm in charge of Heraldry.

Welcome aboard, having read your journal for some time I think you'll fit right in.

Silme's Mistress Ariel of Lindisfarne.

Who are the SCA folks you ran into? I know a few folks in Dublin who are good friends.

Re: Hey Great News

Lord Aidan McGuire is the guy we were talking to - there were a few other people he was with, but I didn't catch names.

If you guys join I may have to rejoin - if only for the arts and crafts, I may actually qualify as a herald this time!

Formfilling more than anything else, you have to register and I believe satisfy a registered herald that you know what you're talking about. I also didn't want to register until after I got my own arms accredited.

Do you mean register your name/arms or register as a herald? I'm really confused. Ulf, can you help???

I hate to say this, but I've been a field and court herald for over twenty years in three kingdoms, and I've never been registered as a herald anywhere. I'm sort of wondering who told you what.

Don't worry about registering your arms right away. You can help out others before you register your own. There's an amazing number of people, especially here in Drachenwald, who don't have their arms registered. (Okay, so mine have been registered for over twenty years, but who's counting? :)

I just hate to see someone who's interested in heraldry feel turned away from the SCA.

Oh the name got registered, the heraldry got refused I have an idea of how to fix that.

I didn't feel turned away, I was a committee member for a while and produced the newsletter for Lough Devnaree while I was working for a local community newsletter, I lapsed my membership because I moved from Galway to Dublin and got out of contract with the right people.

Sorry just caught up on that thread.

It depends what you mean by "being a herald". If you want yo be a local herald, i.e a shire officer, all you need to do is contact the Kingdom herald (you seem to live in dublin so in that case it's Schwarzdrachen [herald at drachenwald dot sca dot org]) and tell him you want to be an officer. A letter of support from your seneschal usually helps but is not required as far as I know (it wasn't for me). If you're taking over from another herald a note of support from him/her would help too.

If what you mean is just generally helping out and being interested in heraldry without having to worry about all the paperwork involved in being an officer (it's not that bad really) then we welcome you with open arms.

I'm the Crown Principality herald for Insulae Draconis if you don't know me so if you want to talk about herladry, whether it's about the office or just general heraldry talk, contact me [ulfdefribois at europe dot com].

As an example I started 2 1/2 years ago as shire herald for harpelestane, I didn't know anything about heraldry, I was just interested. My arms passed only last february.

I'm currently not up to doing a lot of work, but I am interested in Heraldy and have been since I did Calligraphy as part of my leaving cert Art Exams. I like heraldry and like looking at it, am a bit out of practice at the moment tho 8(!!

Since when do heralds have to qualify? (Sorry, been a paid SCA member for 24 years now... have never heard of that.)

I'm the herald for my barony, and I certainly didn't qualify for anything. There are tons of web resources for conflict-checking and such, and for voice heraldry all one needs is practice and projection.

Lord Rodrigo de Cordova
Sable Loat Pursuivant (which means Baronial Loudmouth...or at least the official one.)

Yeah, what Ulf said. :) I'm Ariel of Lindisfarne. I'll most likely be over for an event in Belfast the first weekend of August -- don't know about other events that way, but I'm sure I'll be there. Part of being seneschal means I'm going to have to travel to events all over the UK and Ireland.
