Since
mr_wombat has no DSL at the moment, he's kindly lent me his WoW install discs and account, so I can try it out properly. At present, I've one character, an undead warlock called Wormscion, on Argent Dawn. I'm impressed by the level of roleplaying I see going on around me and the gameplay, and, I have to say, more and more irritated by the cartoon graphics - I was just getting used to the undead when I saw a Tauren.
However, I'll be on and off for the next ten days, so drop me a message if you see me on - I'll be alternating it with DAoC.

I believe I owe you some help in return for yours on DAoC - my character is Macha. Red Branch guild forum on www.irishgaming.com and website is www.theredbranch.net.
The graphics are a mite disconcerting compared to the 'realism' of DAoC (and wait till you see goblins, and especially gnomes!) - but having said that, WoW manages to have actual fires, as opposed to static crystals :-P

Ditto. This was one of the main things that kept me away from the game for a very long time. The bright colors and toonlike graphics annoyed me, and I still cringe at the way most people refer to their character as "toons". Another gripe is that not all classes are available for all races. I'm sure there's some lore-related explanation for this, but to me it's just a feature that restricts diversity. Another thing I don't particulary like is the language barrier. It goes over my head why there is no common language that both factions could speak to some extent. Scheming against the opposite faction could always be done in faction language. It's one glorious discordance as far as I'm concerned. The game manual says that there is an uneasy truce between the two factions, and the game opening cinematic talks about open warfare. So, how exactly did they strike up a truce, if the two factions are so completely incapable of communicating with one another? Go figure.
That said, I find it very easy and enjoyable to trot around in this game, despite the cartoonish graphics. I like wandering around in forests, lakes and rivers, taking it easy. The never-ending questing gets on my nerves sometimes, but so far... I'm kind of liking WoW. :)

This is also a major grip of most players on the RP servers (as opposed to PvE and PvP ones) but it's a common enough factor in many MMORPGs. It used to be possible, but was removed in beta due to the nastiness of inter-faction "conversations."
And yes, the "there's a shaky truce" jars very much with the Alliance intro of "all our troops are off fighting the Horde" (the Horde intro does say the truce is still in place).

"Just last night during (yet another) Southshore/Tarren Mill encounter I found myself (as Rannia) wanting to hide in the tower, sitting in the corner.
I had hoped to do something along the lines of:
Rannia lay curled up in the corner, shaking violently, tears readily flow down her cheeks. She looks up as you approach, desperately huddling further against the wall, clutching her daggers tightly though too terrified by the events transpiring around her to be any threat.
Yet apparantly that would merely come up as:
Rannia makes strange gestures with her hands."
:D
My sister who plays Horde on a PvP server said that there the barrier is a good thing, noting that if both factions would understand what the other party was talking about, such as grouping for a dungeon, they'd rush straight in for the kills. Not sure how it's with PvE servers... I'm still <20 on both sides on mine. :P

It's obviously only applicable to /say and /yell channels, though... the various private and public group channels such as General, LookingForGroup, party, etc., would still be faction-based, so unless someone /yelled 'Looking for group for Wailing Caverns' the other faction wouldn't know about it.

I had a hunter character which was cool, cause I could catch and train any beastie I wanted for a pet. I was a bit annoyed about the time you spend moving about, like when you pay $3 an hour for net access, spending twenty minutes running around looking for druid's moss or similar stuff becomes an expensive hobby.
Anyway as soon as I get home I'll be making use of someone's DaoC account before I decide to buy WoW or DaoC for myself. Gothwalk prepare yourself for the invasion of the computer snatcher.

(I have a free trial disc for DAoC, btw)
